Today marks the 1st birthday of the SX Bottleshare, Essex’s only once a month bottle sharing beer-geekfest! For 12 months now a group of beer enthusiasts meet up, all with a bottle of something special in hand , so they can hang out and chat with like minded people about their favourite subject… good beer. Our groups usually range between 10-14 people, which means we have roughly tried around 130 different beers over the year!
Its been great fun over the past year, the most craziest off the chain night had to have been in the summer when we were around 15 strong including visits from Left Hand Brewing Co’s Sharona along with beer sommelier and author Jane Peyton. It was all going off that night, pizza, pouring Nitro Milk Stout hard, bottle of Pliny the Elder, the start of my doodle reviews as I couldn’t keep up with it all, cheese with crackers and the lotto selection (all names in a glass and a lotto order for drinks – thus sending the whole evening into utter chaos!).
The best thing about the past years worth of SX Bottlesharing is that we are now a group of friends not just a group of randoms that meet up once a month, our drinking sessions have grown into meets outside of the first Tuesday evening of the month!
There have been some milestones reached during the year, including Justin hitting 2,500 check-in’s on Untappd! We also used the night to help raise money for Macmillan during the Big Beery Night campaign.
It can be a hard job keeping up with all the checking in on Untappd, Instagramming photos, Tweeting and reviewing the beers. Reviewing the beers has now turned into my quick doodle reviews, which can to be honest be any old rubbish!
Just some highlights that we have had (that I can remember!) include Elusive Brewing ‘Invisible Wall’, AEgir Byggeri ‘Baever Double White IPA’, Brasserie Correzienne ‘Dordogne Valley’, De Struise Brouwers ‘Ypres 2010 Double Barrel Aged FOB’, Russian River ‘Pliny the Elder’ and Galway Bay ‘Of Foam & Fury’.
For the 1st birthday party we are saying a big thank you to the perfect hosts, The Alehouse in Chelmsford. As a thank you to Alex and all the team we won’t be bringing our own bottles for the share but we will be emptying the beer fridges and showcasing The Alehouse’s quality by buying bottles in house. Again the lotto system is back for a night of no hold barred craft chaos!
I’m already looking forward to the next year of SX Bottleshare and hoping that even more people will join us on the first Tuesday of each month. Taking the SX Bottleshare on tour and linking up with the Norwhich Bottle Share (our inspiration for the group) is something I hope to also happen this year. If you love beer and want to join us then please check out SX Bottleshare website and come down and see us… Cheers Happy Brithday!
